Latest testing numbers for several Razorback players
First-year Arkansas head strength and conditioning coach Ben Sowders has been working with Razorback players since December, and in that time several have made impressive gains. There are also several newcomers who have only been with him the past eight weeks who have stood out
As for speed, Sowders said they have doubled the number of players who could reach 21 miles per hour (which is measured using a satellite). Only one player last season could hit 22 miles per hour. That player was unnamed, but he was likely now-junior running back AJ Green or redshirt freshman wide receiver Isaiah Sategna. Now there are five in Green, 5-11, 205; Sategna, 5-11, 180; redshirt senior WR Tyrone Broden, 6-7, 195; redshirt senior WR Andrew Armstrong, 6-4, 201; and redshirt senior safety Malik Chavis, 6-2, 194.
“We’ve got 36% of our guys that wear the GPS that can run 21 miles an hour or faster,” Sowders said. “We’ve got 5 guys who can run 22 or faster and then 61% off our team that can over 20 mph. That’s everybody. I’m talking about O-line, D-line, tight ends and your skills. You’ve got over half your team being able to run 20.”
One of the more impressive speed numbers came from true freshman tight end Shamar Easter, who according to the 247Sports Composite ranking is the No. 1 prospect in the state of Arkansas.
At 6-5, 223 pounds, Easter has hit 21.7 mph. Again, only five players on the team have reached 22 mph, and Easter is nearly 20 pounds heavier than the biggest guy to hit 22.
“Pretty good as a tight end, right? Because in this league, it’s typically going to be a safety or a ‘backer on a tight end, so that creates an advantage for us,” Sowders said.
