Central Wisconsin Veteran
MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Jerry and Suzan Zehrung, proud owners of Patriot Greenz & Treatz in Pittsville, have pioneered a culinary revolution in Central Wisconsin, offering a range of freeze-dried food with dedication to quality, innovation, and community support. A disabled veteran, the business’ name is an homage to Jerry’s military call sign ‘Z.’
Freeze-dried products (fruit and candy currently) are available at local Weiler Convenience Stores in Marshfield, with more offerings anticipated in the future.
“Weiler’s unflinchingly supported us and have absolutely blown our minds,” said Zehrung. “They have been incredible to us and we are so grateful to them.”
Established in 2021 as a microgreen wheatgrass company, Patriot Greenz started with a state-of-the-art commercial hydroponic system, producing premium microgreens and wheatgrass powder.
“Microgreens are the pinnacle of nutritional excellence,” Jerry said, emphasizing their superior health benefits and potential to redefine the local culinary landscape.
The business quickly expanded to offer a variety of freeze-dried products, including vegetables, candy, and fruit bought at local farmer’s markets. With a certified kitchen currently at their disposal, the Zehrungs are in the process of constructing their own facility.
Patriot Greenz’s utilization of freeze-drying technology, originally developed by NASA and better known now for the Tik-Tok trend, ensures extended shelf life and nutritional integrity.
“When we freeze-dry locally-sourced blueberries and strawberries, they remain good for up to 25 years when stored properly,” he said.
The company’s inception was driven by a desire for self-sufficiency, as Jerry’s diverse background – from law enforcement to military service – molded his determination to carve a self-reliant path.
Collaborative partnerships with local businesses, including stalwarts like Weiler’s, have played a pivotal role in Patriot Greenz’s ascent.
“We want to do more than candy,” Jerry said, outlining their vision to expand their culinary repertoire and incorporate locally-produced, freeze-dried vegetables, milk, eggs, full meals, and more. The Zehrungs’ enthusiasm is palpable, reflecting a profound love for their craft and community.
“We’ve only really scratched the surface and I’m just so excited,” said Jerry, adding that he really values doing business locally.
Amidst their successes, Jerry humbly steers the spotlight towards the community. “The story isn’t about us; it’s about our community. There’s so many things that our little company in Pittsville can do.” (‘Can do’ was the motto of his military unit in the Seabees, he added.)
Patriot Greenz has become a conduit for their altruism, supporting their church and embracing their role as a locally-owned freeze-dried food pioneer. Jerry and Suzan Zehrung’s Patriot Greenz has not only redefined Central Wisconsin’s culinary landscape but also epitomizes the spirit of community collaboration and innovation.
